A known drug unexpectedly protected the lungs of smokers

Monday, August 22, 2011

In the last decade, there is evidence that stains do not only lower cholesterol and protect from heart disease. It was found that drugs of this class inhibit inflammation, and the results of tests on animals suggest that stains may protect the lungs.

The scientists examined the medical records of 485 smokers and ex-smokers, focusing on the state of the patient's lungs. It was found, for example, that people taking stations, the amount of light is reduced each year by only 1%, which is impressive compared to 10 percent reduction in "ordinary" patients.

Sta tins block an enzyme called reductase HMG-CoA, which participates in the production of different fats. Blocking this enzyme lowers cholesterol and reduces the concentration of molecules that "turn on" inflammation in response to stimuli such as smoke.

And, if successful, could partially prevent smokers harmful effects of cigarettes with the help of pills, which has already established itself as an effective and safe. No other product does not protect against smoke-related damage to the lungs.

However, scientists point out that stains will never be as useful as getting rid of the habit.
